Five Fridays separate you from Labor Day. Ocean View Beach Park has programmed nearly every one of them, the East Beach Farmers Market has another sixteen Saturdays after that, and if you live here you already know the traffic on Ocean View Avenue reads the calendar too. Here is how to work the neighborhood's late-summer rhythm without wasting a weekend.
Norfolk Festevents runs a themed Friday night series at Ocean View Beach Park from 6 to 9 p.m., free and open to the public, and the August lineup is the densest stretch of the season.
One quiet fact worth internalizing: Ocean View Beach Park sits at the end of Granby Street at Ocean View Avenue on the former site of the Ocean View Amusement Park. Take Interstate 64, exit at 4th View Street, and go east on Ocean View Avenue; the park is on the left. If you live east of Little Creek, skip the Granby approach on event nights and come in from the east on Ocean View Avenue instead. The park has its own lot plus overflow across the street, and the west-end congestion is the reason most first-timers give up on the series after one try.
If you want a warm-up act, the Sunday Big Bands on the Bay series closed out its 2026 run on July 5, so August Fridays are the main event now. Cite that to any visitor asking why the Sunday lawn is empty at sunset.
The Farmers Markets of We Dig Tidewater run the East Beach/EOV market on Saturdays 9 am–Noon May 2 through the Saturday before Thanksgiving (November 21, 2026) at Bay Oaks Park at 2413 E Ocean View Avenue in Norfolk. Sixty-five vendors rotate through the season, and August is when the produce tables actually earn the drive.

Parking is the part that separates residents from day-trippers. The market's own guidance: two public parking lots are located along 3rd Bay Street, and parallel parking is available on surrounding side streets in all directions, including 5th & 6th Bay Streets and Pleasant Avenue. Locals know 5th and 6th Bay clear out by 10:15 as the first wave leaves.
The move most residents settle into by mid-August: farmers market at 9, walk the dog on the beach at 10:30, lunch at home, then keep the evening open for Friday's park event or Saturday's dinner out.
Norfolk operates three separate beach parks along the same stretch of the Bay, and treating them as interchangeable is the first mistake newcomers make. Each has a different personality on a weekend morning.

Lifeguard coverage is narrower than most residents assume: lifeguards are on duty at these parks on weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. That window closes on September 7 this year, which is another reason August weekends carry weight.
The Ocean View Fishing Pier is the fourth waterfront option and the one that rewards a lazy Saturday. Overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, the pier offers complete facilities and equipment for everyone who lives and loves to fish; just off Interstate 64, the pier stretches out 1,690 feet into the bay into one of the East Coast's most bountiful fishing grounds. No license needed. Rent rods, buy tackle, and cast a line. That last detail matters if you have out-of-town family staying with you and no one wants to deal with a Virginia freshwater/saltwater license question at 7 a.m.
East Ocean View is not a fine-dining neighborhood and does not pretend to be. What it has is a set of walk-in spots that make the rest of the weekend work.
Breakfast. The Oceanview Diner at 9619 Granby Street runs 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week and adds a dinner service Wednesday through Friday. This is the pre-market coffee stop for anyone who wants to eat before shopping instead of grazing food-truck samples in front of the vendor.
Lunch and afternoon drinks. The Ocean View Fishing Pier & Restaurant at 400 W Ocean View Ave keeps a kitchen open until 9 p.m. weekdays and 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with a rooftop bar over the water. Captain Groovy's Raw Bar & Grill is, per VisitNorfolk, a beloved local haven for the hungry, thirsty and sandy, famous for its breezy atmosphere and fresh-off-the-boat seafood. Neither takes reservations in the traditional sense during summer, so build in a wait.
Tacos and casual dinner. The neighborhood's Latin scene is deeper than most residents credit. If you're in the mood for Latin American fare, the neighborhood is packed with stellar taco joints like Jessy's Tienda y Taqueria. The OV Beach Tavern covers the neighborhood-bar side of the equation for post-concert Friday nights.
If you only stack one weekend in August, make it the third one. Friday, August 21 is Family Fun Night at the Beach Park, and Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, is the Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival presented by Sentara Health Plans at Town Point Park downtown. The neighborhood geography works in your favor. From East Ocean View, you can hit Family Fun Night at 6 p.m., be home by 9, and drop the kids with a sitter for a late set at Town Point Park the next evening without either half of the weekend feeling rushed. That's the version of the weekend the downtown coverage never mentions, because the writers do not live at this end of Granby Street.
The reason to pay attention to this stretch is that programming density collapses after Labor Day. The Beach Park's themed Fridays end September 5. Lifeguards leave the same weekend. The farmers market keeps going until November 21, but the produce shifts from tomatoes and stone fruit to squash and greens within three weekends. If you moved to East Ocean View for the water and the calendar, August is when the neighborhood is most itself.
